We’re looking for an experienced and passionate curator to care for one of the largest collection of police and crime artefacts in the country.
Greater Manchester Police Museum and Archives, which was founded in 1981, is based in an original 19th century police station, now a Grade II listed building in Manchester city centre. The curator will be creating a snapshot of key moments of GMP’s vast history to capture the imagination of visitors and providing excellent visitor experience.
The new curator will come with a wealth of experience in working in similar environments and have extensive knowledge in collection care and management.
Our museum curator will be responsible for creating informative and historically accurate displays and delivering engaging and informative events. They will work closely with the museum education and engagement officer and be responsible for a wide range of operational support activities required to keep the venue running.
The museum’s purpose is to educate, inform and entertain people of all ages, from all communities about the policing of yesteryear and today. It serves to collect and preserve archive material and objects relating to the history and development of what is now considered Greater Manchester Police from the Victorian era, through both World Wars as well as the forces past 50 years.
If you can identify the stories behind the artefacts and communicate them in an easy to understand and engaging way, we would love to hear from you.
The successful candidate will have experience and a proven track record of museum curation, fundraising, working with partnership agencies and managing volunteers. They will also be experienced in collection care and management. They will use these skills to identify and harness the full potential of the museum’s collections and reach wider audiences by using new technologies in additional to maximising the appeal of the historic building and physical displays.
The role will require working from the museum, which is set in the heart of Manchester’s vibrant Northern Quarter.
